The lass, as she’s been called ever since her mother refused to name her*, lives peacefully with her many siblings, rather silly mother and her loving father. That is, until the white reindeer is spotted. The lass’s siblings (except for her favourite brother, Hans Peter) rush out to be the first to find and catch the rare animal. The white reindeer has been known to give gifts that one can only dream of. The lass follows, soon after, in the hopes of finding the reindeer herself and asking the reindeer to help Hans Peter. Hans Peter has gone through a great trial and has yet to recover.
The lass finds the reindeer but it can’t grant that wish, claiming that there was nothing it could do. Instead it gives her two things- one of which is the ability to speak to animals, a gift that soon causes her to gain a faithful sidekick, her dog, Rollo.
One day a polar bear turns up on their doorstep and asks the lass to come with him and live in his castle. In exchange the lass’s family will be given wealth and fame. Despite her brother, Hans Peter’s, warnings of enchantments, the lass agrees to go.
After racing through the cold, the bear, Rollo and the lass arrive at a palace of ice. There they are met with silence, secrets and strange disappearances. And for some reason at night, a strange man crawls into the other end of her bed. The lass doesn’t know what’s going on but she’s determined to find out. No matter what the cost.
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow is a fabulous retelling of East of the Sun and West of the Moon. The writing was beautiful and vivid and I could easily imagine the palace and the icy weather. It helped that it was snowing outside when I read it. It’s the perfect book to read while curled up in your bed and drinking hot chocolate!
Jessica Day George does an excellent job of following the tale to the letter but she also gave just enough depth to the characters that it was easy to sympathise and root for the them. And now, I desperately want to reread East by Edith Pattou so I can compare them. Although, before I do that, I’ll be reading Dragon Slippers!

Sounds magical!
This books seems to be quite similar to "East" which I loved. I've added "Sun, etc." to my list as well. It sounds amazing. You have some really interesting titles on your wishlist. I'm going to have to check those out also.
